Short Articles on the Basics of Official Statistics

Background

The department has been making continuous efforts in promoting statistical literacy. We provide varied channels to people in all sectors of the community to enable them to obtain official statistics conveniently and to promote their understanding of official statistics and their proper application.

The short statistical articles included in this module are targeted at secondary school students and cover every aspect of statistics. Describing in key points on basic statistical concepts and data, the articles facilitate students to have understanding of latest official statistics. This will in turn enable them to build up a better foundation in the correct use of statistical data.

The Chinese version of some of these articles has been published during 19 November to 17 December 2007 in the Ming Pao Daily after minor editorial modifications under the column of the 40th Anniversary Commemoration of the Census and Statistics Department. The English version has been published after minor editorial modifications in The Standard during the same period under the column "Hong Kong by Numbers" of the 40th Anniversary Commemoration of the Census and Statistics Department.
