World Statistics Day 2025

The fourth World Statistics Day

The United Nations General Assembly had designated 20 October 2010 as the first World Statistics Day to acknowledge the importance of reliable and timely statistics for informed policy decisions, and had further decided to celebrate the World Statistics Day every five years on 20 October.  The fourth World Statistics Day is commemorated on 20 October 2025 under the theme "Driving change with quality statistics and data for everyone", highlighting the growing significance of high-quality statistics in this fast-changing era, and that statistics facilitate informed research, planning and decision-making in various sectors.

Local activities to mark the World Statistics Day 2025

Exhibition booth set up at Hong Kong Book Fair 2025 (16-22 July 2025)

To raise public awareness of the World Statistics Day and promote the 2026 Population Census, the Census and Statistics Department set up an exhibition booth at Hong Kong Book Fair 2025 held during 16-22 July 2025 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.  The exhibition received favourable responses from the public.

Public talk on “Re-engineering of the 2026 Population Census and Use of Innovative Technology: Enhancing Cost-effectiveness and Data Quality” (20 September 2025)

To celebrate the fourth World Statistics Day, as proclaimed by the United Nations Statistics Division, the Census and Statistics Department delivered a public talk on “Re-engineering of the 2026 Population Census and Use of Innovative Technology: Enhancing Cost-effectiveness and Data Quality” at the Hong Kong Science Museum on 20 September 2025.  The speaker, Mr Michael CHOI, Statistician, introduced a series of re-engineering initiatives implemented and the applications of innovative technology (e.g. using a deep learning model for automatic text coding and address matching) in the 2026 Population Census, which were designed to enhance cost-effectiveness and data quality.  Favourable responses were received from the public.

Public lecture on “Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone” (20 October 2025)

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) jointly organised a public lecture on “Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone” on 20 October 2025 with the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), the Hong Kong Statistical Society (HKSS) and the Education Bureau in celebration of the fourth World Statistics Day as proclaimed by the United Nations Statistics Division.

Mr Leo YU, the Commissioner for Census and Statistics, and Professor CHAN Ngai-hang, the President of HKSS, were the officiating guests.  Speakers included Ms Polly WONG, former Marketing Science Partner of Meta Hong Kong, Mr Michael CHOI of C&SD, and Professor LI Wai-keung of EdUHK.  For brief details of the lecture, please refer to the brochure.

The lecture received favourable responses from teachers in primary and secondary schools, students, government officials and the general public.

Professional forum on “Application of Data Science in Official Statistics” for professional officers of the Government Statistical Service (30 October 2025)

Professional forums are organised regularly by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) for professional officers of the Government Statistical Service to foster their professional development.  To celebrate the fourth World Statistics Day as proclaimed by the United Nations Statistics Division, C&SD organised a professional forum on “Application of Data Science in Official Statistics” on 30 October 2025.

The forum covered two topics, which were “Strategies for the Application of Data Science in Official Statistics” and “Latest Development in the 2026 Population Census”.  There were active and fruitful discussions at the forum and valuable views were exchanged among participants.

24-hour Global Statistics Webinar (20 October 2025)

To celebrate the fourth World Statistics Day, the United Nations Regional Commissions united to host a 24-hour global statistics webinar under the theme “Driving change with quality statistics and data for everyone” on 20 October 2025 to showcase national and regional initiatives in official statistics, and raise public awareness of the importance of trusted statistics for sustainable development, governance and decision-making.

The Census and Statistics Department had participated in the webinar, during which Mr Harry LUK, Statistician, shared the department’s experiences on the topic “Artificial Intelligence in the Compilation of Merchandise Trade Statistics” with other participants.  There were active discussions and valuable insights were exchanged.
