The Department has been using an Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) in handling enquiries since 1994.  The system enables enquirers to obtain answers within a short time. It is essentially an automatic system but can also effectively connect an enquirer to the appropriate staff member to follow up on the matter as necessary. Provision of quality services : enquiries on statistics from members of the public via telephone, facsimile, letter, email or personal visit are always welcome. When the Department was just formed, there were only around a hundred staff, with the majority being clerical staff engaging in the compilation of external trade statistics of Hong Kong.  In 1972, the first outposted statistical unit was established in the Education Department.  Since then, the government statistical service (comprising C&SD and outposted statistical units) has been growing steadily.  Today, the Department has over 1 200 staff.  There are another some 200 statistical grade officers working in the outposted statistical units in about 30 bureaux/departments.
