The year 2012 marks the 45th anniversary of the Census and Statistics Department(C&SD). In commemoration of this momentous occasion, C&SD is launching this web-based exhibition on its website.
The exhibition highlights the major events and accomplishments in the history of C&SD. Taking the opportunity, the Department also joins the community in celebrating the 15th year of establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region through exhibiting a host of statistical indicators which depict the developments of Hong Kong on various fronts since 1997.
Today, Hong Kong has burgeoned into a major international commercial and financial centre, gaining prominence as the premier financial and trading hub for the Asia-Pacific region. It has established itself as one of the most cosmopolitan and vibrant cities in the world. The statistical graphs and charts presented in the exhibition well illustrate the social, economic and financial developments of Hong Kong over time. Data in the past speak for themselves and show the direction of our roadmap for the future.
Also included in the exhibition is an index series of statistical feature articles published in the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics since July 1971. Relevant web-links are provided to facilitate direct access to the individual feature articles. Showcasing the different facets and changes of Hong Kong over time, these feature articles are educational and are important reference materials of practical and historic values.
An interesting and vivid component of the exhibition which I would like to draw your attention to is the photo gallery. From the collection of cherished photos, one can trace the important milestones in the development of C&SD since its establishment in 1967 and appreciate the vital role played by official statistics in serving the community. The Department’s achievements today are anchored on the unfailing support from different sectors of the community. Special tribute is paid to our predecessors and all colleagues of C&SD. Through their diligence, dedication and professionalism, the Department has been able to live up to its vision and accomplish its mission over the past many years.
Over all these years, the Department has been sparing no efforts to develop and open up new frontiers, with the aim of providing adequate, reliable and timely statistics for reference by the Government and various sectors of the community to rise to many of the challenges posed by the future. Looking ahead, C&SD will embrace its strengths and build upon the existing momentum to further bolster the official statistical system in the quest for excellence in serving the community.
