Method of Compiling Population Figures of Hong Kong

On 11 August 2000, the Census and Statistics Department announced the adoption of the "resident population" method, to replace the "extended de facto" method, for compiling population estimates of Hong Kong. Details of the revision to the compilation method and relevant revised data were released through a press conference and a press release.

In the September 2000 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics, a feature article entitled "Revision to the Method of Compiling Population Estimates of Hong Kong" was published, providing greater details about the methodological aspect of the revision and the reasons for implementing it.

With the availability of the latest 2001 Population Census results, the population estimates since mid-1996 have been updated. Another feature article, entitled "Compiling Population Estimates of Hong Kong", was published in the February 2002 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics. The article contains the updated series of population estimates, covering the period 1971 - 2001. Details of the compilation methodology of the estimates are presented in the article, which also contains the main points of the earlier feature article mentioned in the previous paragraph.
