The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) partnered with GIS Academy to co-organise the “ArcGIS StoryMaps Application Competition 2023/24 – Telling Stories Using Census Data”. The competition aimed to promote the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and enhance the knowledge of population census data and statistical literacy among secondary school students, while fostering STEAM education. Participating students were challenged to analyse the 2021 Population Census data and utilise ArcGIS software to create StoryMaps, combining map and storytelling design techniques to visualise their findings. C&SD has all along been striving to promote data literacy and nurture young talents. Throughout the competition, C&SD actively participated in the organisation and professional adjudication, and encouraged students to enhance their capabilities in organising and presenting large sets of data using computer software.
This year’s competition received a positive response, with the quality of the submissions surpassing expectations. Participating students effectively utilised population census data to explore and analyse various social phenomena in Hong Kong, creating compelling StoryMaps to present their findings.
