Abstract

This publication presents the results and methodology of the latest round of Household Expenditure Survey (HES) conducted in 1999/2000. It also describes the main features of the rebased Consumer Price Indices (CPIs). In line with international standards and practices, the HES is conducted by the Census and Statistics Department once every five years to collect up-to-date information on the expenditure patterns of households in Hong Kong. The information is essential for updating the expenditure weights of the CPIs, which are widely used by both the government and private sector as an important indicator of inflation faced by consumers. Based on the survey results, the 1999/2000-based Composite CPI, CPI(A), CPI(B) and CPI(C) are compiled.

The HES results are also useful for various studies on the consumption behavior of households in Hong Kong and the formulation of social and economic policies by the government.
