Abstract

This monthly publication is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables in 11 sections. It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong. Topics include population; labour; external trade; business performance; housing and property; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; national income and Balance of Payments; prices; and energy. Statistics are presented whenever possible in the form of monthly or quarterly figures for the latest 15 months for which data are available, together with annual figures for the latest three complete years. For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available. Description of the scope and nature of the statistical data and definitions of the terms used in this publication are provided in the "Concepts and Methods" part in each section. Further references to thematic reports relating to the topics covered in each section are also listed. Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, the publication also contains several feature articles in each issue. Three feature articles entitled "External Direct Investment Statistics", "Salient Features of Hong Kong's International Investment Position for the period 2001 to 2010" and "Trend in Marital Status of Hong Kong Population" are published in the January 2012 issue.
