Abstract

This article analyses the port cargo statistics of Hong Kong during the period from 1999 to 2004. The port of Hong Kong is a hub of the Asia-Pacific region. In 2004, Hong Kong's port cargo throughput reached 221 million tonnes, an increase of 6% over the previous year. The port cargo movements between Hong Kong and the mainland of China accounted for 37% of Hong Kong's port cargo throughput. Furthermore, about 76% of these Mainland-Hong Kong port cargo movements were between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region.
