Abstract
Nowadays, it is increasingly common for men and women to stay longer in education and start work when they grow older, thus forming families at relatively older ages. The median age at first marriage for men increased from 27.0 years in 1981 to 30.5 years in 2002 and for women, from 23.9 years to 27.6 years over the same period. The number of registered first marriages of both parties has been falling during 1981–2002. Meanwhile, the number of divorces increased during this period and the number in 2002 was six times that in 1981. Remarriages also rose considerably over the same period.

This article provides a detailed analysis on the marriage and divorce trends in Hong Kong from 1981 to 2002.
