Abstract

Hong Kong has developed into one of the most vibrant international financial centres in the world. The contribution of the financial services sector to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product reached some 16% in 2008, almost doubled the figure in 1998. Although the financial services sector experienced severe setback in 2008 due to financial tsunami, the business of this sector saw a strong revival in 2009 in the wake of the gradual fade-away of the impact of financial tsunami. This article presents the operating characteristics and business performance of selected industries in the sector between 2006 and 2008. It also briefly highlights the overall quarterly business performance of selected industries in the sector in 2009.
