Abstract

The retail sector is one of the major service sectors in Hong Kong. Data on the structural and operating characteristics of the retail sector are collected annually by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) via the Annual Survey of Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels. Monthly statistics on retail sales of goods sold by local retail establishments are compiled by the C&SD from data collected via the Monthly Survey of Retail Sales. This article analyses the operating characteristics of the retail sector during 1995 to 2005 and the recent business performance of the retail sector in 2006 and January to May 2007.
