Abstract
Consumer spending, as measured by private consumption expenditure (PCE), has been on a steady growth trend in the early 1990s. Nevertheless, it becomes more volatile in recent years, in particular in the aftermath of the Asian Financial Crisis. The change in consumer spending is a crucial element of Hong Kong's economic growth. This article analyses the latest trends and the composition change in overall consumer spending in Hong Kong.
