Abstract

The Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification (HSIC) is a system which classifies economic units into industry classes based on the major economic activity undertaken by each unit. This classification system is used by the Census and Statistics Department in various surveys and statistical systems.The manual of HSIC introduces the background of compilation and classification principles of the HSIC. It also gives a full list of industry classes in order of HSIC codes, with descriptions of the economic activities covered by each industry class.With the widespread establishment of information technology and telecommunications companies in Hong Kong, the HSIC has been revised to provide a more refined and up-to-date classification framework for users in compiling related statistics.The revised HSIC is named as Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification Version 1.1 (HSIC V1.1) and a supplement about the revision is attached in the publication.
