Users may require statistics more detailed than those contained in our press releases and publications.  For small volume of data that could be easily retrieved, data may be provided free of charge normally within one working day. For larger volume of data, photocopies of tabulations or magnetic diskettes/CD-ROM containing such data may be provided at a charge. Users may also choose to copy the data themselves from the available tabulations in printout form, for which no charge will be made. Occasional requests are received for statistics not readily available from standard tabulations. These are also entertained at a charge subject to the level of analysis permissible having regard to considerations of statistical precision and data confidentiality.

Besides providing statistical information to the public, the department is also prepared to give advice on the interpretation and application of statistics so as to maximize their utility to users.

Users are welcome to approach us for assistance by telephone, facsimile, letter, electronic mail or personal visit. The relevant contact numbers and addresses are shown in the Enquiries section.

Access to Datasets for Selected Projects

Academic researchers may approach the department to apply for access to the datasets of the Population Census/By-censuses, the Household Expenditure Survey, the General Household Survey or the registered birth and death records to support the conduct of socio-economic studies. The datasets must be used for academic research purposes only. All records in the datasets have been thoroughly screened to ensure that particulars of individual households and persons cannot be identified. Specifically, all record identifiers (such as name and address of individual respondents) have been removed and other information has been suitably coded.

An academic researcher wishing to gain access to the aforesaid datasets may make an application to the department through the management of the academic institution to which the researcher belongs. Applications will be considered by the department on a case-by-case basis, having regard to such factors as the nature of the study, data relevance and precision, and data confidentiality. If an application is approved, the applicant must sign an Undertaking with C&SD that requires him/her to comply with various conditions in using the datasets.
