A publication "Hong Kong 2001 Population Census Thematic Report - Persons from the Mainland Having Resided in Hong Kong for Less Than 7 Years" is released today (December 20) by the Census and Statistics Department.

The 2001 Population Census was conducted in March 2001. Results from the Census have been made available in a series of publications. Since October 2001, a total of seventeen reports have been released.

Population Census is the primary source of data for small geographical areas and population sub-groups. It provides a wealth of data on the socio-economic characteristics of the population in Hong Kong, thus allowing studies to be undertaken on various facets of the community and specific sub-groups of the population.

Among the publications are a series of thematic reports on population sub-groups. Thematic reports published earlier include youths, women and men, older persons and ethnic minorities. The report "Hong Kong 2001 Population Census Thematic Report - Persons from the Mainland Having Resided in Hong Kong for Less Than 7 Years" provides a comprehensive range of statistics on persons from the Mainland having resided in Hong Kong for less than 7 years. It goes into some length in analysing the characteristics of these persons: demographic characteristics, education, labour force, living arrangement and household characteristics, and geographical characteristics. Comparisons are also made with results of the past population census/by-census.

The summary of the report can be downloaded from the website of the Census and Statistics Department.

The report is in bilingual form and is available at $38 per copy. It can be purchased in person from:

(i) Government Publications Centre, Ground Floor, Low Block, Queensway Government Offices, 66 Queensway, Hong Kong (Tel.: 2537 1910); or
(ii) Publications Unit of the Census and Statistics Department, 19th Floor, Wanchai Tower, 12 Harbour Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong (Tel.: 2582 3025).

It may be completed and sent back together with a cheque or bank draft covering all necessary cost and postage. The order form is also available for downloading from the website of the Department.

Another thematic report on single parents, compiled using the results of the 2001 Population Census, will be published shortly.
