The Census and Statistics Department has sent out more than 2 200 000 letters to all households in Hong Kong to inform them about the conduct of the 2001 Population Census (the Census) between March 15 - 27. Some 22 000 census officers will be deployed to visit every corner of the territory within the 13-day period. The Commissioner for Census and Statistics, Mr Frederick Ho, reminded members of the public today (March 9) that the Census required participation of the whole population in order to obtain quality data. Mr Ho noted that about 1 880 000 households would be subject to simple enumeration only. These households will receive a short form together with the householder letter. "Upon receipt of the questionnaire, household members should complete the form with the required information. A census officer will come to each household to check and collect the completed questionnaire," Mr Ho explained. "In case there are more than one household living under one roof, each household should complete a separate questionnaire. Additional questionnaires are available from the visiting census officer," he added. The remaining 320 000 households selected for detailed inquiry will not receive any questionnaire. Instead, a census officer will come to interview every member in the household to collect the required information. Questions covering a range of socio-economic characteristics of household members will be asked. "Household members should answer the questions themselves, except those who are unable to give the particulars for some sufficient reasons such as being too young. I hope members of the public would render us full co-operation and support so that we can obtain accurate information," the Commissioner said. Mr Ho pointed out that to facilitate verification of identity, all households would be informed of the name of the visiting census officer in the householder letter. Each census officer will wear a grey vest with a Census badge, carry a red satchel with the Census logo and a Census Officer Certificate of Identity that is available for inspection. Members of the public who have questions or would like to verify the identity of the visiting census officer may telephone the Census Enquiry Hotline at 2926 6688, quoting the reference number on the householder letter. "Statistics compiled from the Census information are vital to the Government in planning for the future. I therefore appeal to all members of the public to provide accurate information. Under the Census and Statistics Ordinance, all persons specified to provide information are obliged to do so," Mr Ho said. "Information collected regarding individual persons and households will be kept strictly confidential and will not be released to any other parties concerned, not even Government departments. All questionnaires will be destroyed within 12 months after the Census is completed," he added.
