On 1 July 1997, Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. In respect of statistics in this section, "Hong Kong" stands for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region while "China" stands for the mainland of China with effect from July 1997.

 Average monthly salaries covers the following elements of payments to workers:
(i) basic wages/salaries (including paid holidays and leave);
(ii) commission and tips (tips received directly from customers are excluded);
(iii) shift allowance;
(iv) cost-of-living allowance;
(v) meal allowance and meal benefits;
(vi) good attendance bonus;
(vii) guaranteed year-end bonus; and
(viii) other regular and guaranteed bonuses and allowances.
Employees under the electricity and gas supply, public bus services, railway and cable transport, and licensed and franchised ferry services sections are excluded.
 Starting from 2009, the wage enquiry conducted in the second and fourth quarters of a year is carried out at a reduced scale (with sample size reduced from 2 000 to 1 100 establishments). Therefore, wage statistics at detailed industry and occupation breakdowns are not available for the second and fourth quarters of a year (in respect of reference periods of June and December respectively).
